In swimming, an annual training plan makes sure that athletes develop the range of skills needed to become a successful competitor. It shows the emphasis for a particular bloc of training, whether each week is long-axis, short-axis or IM based, and the key aim of each session. For swimmers at this stage of development, the emphasis is always on developing technique and race skills rather than on physical conditioning. There are, though, slight variations in training intensity and volume, and these are indicated by the colour column (red = higher intensity, more rest).
